The exact mechanism of her cold manipulation is unclear. Reisen Udongein Inaba speculates that Cirno warms up internally when using her ability, suggesting she absorbs heat from her surroundings rather than creating cold from nothing.

Cirno's favorite prank involves freezing frogs and watching them revive as they thaw in the water. However, approximately one in three attempts fails, resulting in the frog shattering into pieces.

Personality and "9. baka" Origin

Cirno is childish, confident, and possesses a pronounced superiority complex. She frequently proclaims herself "the strongest," a claim she makes on three separate occasions in Phantasmagoria of Flower View. In Hidden Star in Four Seasons, she declares, "Like I care! I'm the fairy who shall soon lord over Gensokyo! I can go anywhere and do anything I want!" Her overconfidence often leads to behavior others consider foolish.

When warned by Okina Matara in Hidden Star in Four Seasons that borrowed power might overwhelm her body, Cirno ignores the warning and insists the power is entirely her own. Okina concludes that Cirno is simply a dumb fairy. In Visionary Fairies in Shrine, Cirno faces Okina again alongside Gensokyo's fairies. Despite being clearly outmatched, Cirno insists Okina is bluffing, prompting Clownpiece to wonder if Cirno is truly an idiot.

Despite her reputation, Cirno demonstrates pockets of intelligence. She can read and count, showing knowledge of rounding and fractions in Great Fairy Wars. In Phantasmagoria of Flower View, she recognizes she is endangered during a battle against Yuuka Kazami. Additionally, when warned by Eiki Shiki that eternity does not truly exist even for fairies, Cirno reflects solemnly on her mortality and the prospect of Hell before Aya Shameimaru helps her focus on enjoying the present.

The ⑨ Symbol

The recurring "⑨" symbol associated with Cirno originates from the Phantasmagoria of Flower View manual, where she is officially labeled "9. baka" (⑨. バカ, lit. "9. Idiot") in an explanation of the game screen's layout. The Touhou Hisoutensoku manual repeats this label, cementing the symbol as her canonical fan identifier.

Game Appearances and Roles

Cirno debuted as the Stage 2 boss of Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, where she attacked Reimu's party seemingly to test her strength. She reprised this role in the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil (New Classic) remake. Cirno returns as the Stage 1 midboss in both Perfect Cherry Blossom and Double Dealing Character. In Perfect Cherry Blossom, she reappears to challenge the player character once more.

Playable and Protagonist Roles

Cirno is a playable character in Phantasmagoria of Flower View, Touhou Hisoutensoku, and Hidden Star in Four Seasons. She serves as the main protagonist of Great Fairy Wars, where she investigates the destruction of her home and defeats the Three Mischievous Fairies. After this incident, Cirno wanders around, bored of weak opponents. She encounters Marisa Kirisame, whom she considers a worthy opponent. During their battle, Marisa realizes Cirno is not a pushover and increases the power of her attacks.

In Touhou Hisoutensoku, Cirno appears on the cover and becomes intrigued by the Daidarabotchi, hoping to tame it so she will not be afraid of anything. She shows tactical awareness by admitting she cannot defeat the Daidarabotchi if it resides in a hot spring's boiler due to the heat. In Phantasmagoria of Flower View, she wanders aimlessly, unconcerned by the flower incident, treating flowers merely as objects to freeze.
